James Bradshaw and Jefferey Jones of the Globe and Mail report Alberta government fires AIMCo board and CEO, plans to ‘reset focus’: Alberta’s government has fired the CEO and the entire board of Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo), citing a need “to restore confidence” in the provincial pension fund manager. The provincial government dismissed the 10-member board as well as chief executive officer Evan Siddall, and said it plans “to reset the investment corporation’s focus,” starting with the appointment of a new board chair within 30 days, and an interim CEO within a days. In the meantime, Minister of Finance Nate Horner will be AIMCo’s sole director and board chair, but will not make investment decicions or receive any pay for those roles. “All board appointments have been rescinded and a new board will be established after a permanent chair is named,” the government said in a news release on Thursday. (AIMCo) to launch operations abroad as it chased higher returns and the extent to which the investment manager should invest in Alberta were sources of tension with the provincial government in the months leading up to Alberta’s stunning decision this week to remove AIMCo’s entire board of directors and chief executive, according to several people familiar with what transpired. In a news release Thursday, the Alberta government said the “reset” at AIMCo was driven by rising costs at the Crown corporation, including third-party management fees and salaries and benefits that were not matched by a corresponding return on investment. Barbara Shecter of the National Post reports Canada Pension Plan investing board posts 1.3% return for year: The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board posted a net return of 1.3 per cent for the fiscal year ended March 31, ending the year with net fund assets of $570 billion compared to $539 billion a year earlier. The CPP fund has a 10-year net return of 10 per cent. The $31 billion increase in net assets this year consisted of $8 billion in net income and $23 billion in net transfers from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Net CPP cash flows in fiscal 2023 were higher than usual due to higher employment rates , an increased limit to the year’s maximum pensionable earnings, an increase to additional CPP contribution inflows and a lump-sum inflow in the fourth quarter due to forecasting adjustments made by the CPP. Barbara Shecter reports fired AIMCo chair disputes Alberta’s narrative on costs in letter to Horner: The former interim chair of Alberta Investment Management Corp. has written a letter to the Alberta cabinet minister who fired him last week to dispute what he calls an “incorrect narrative” and “misinformation” about the performance of the asset manager and Crown corporation. In a letter to Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner that was viewed by the Financial Post, Kenneth Kroner disputes the data and a number of assertions used to justify the government’s “reset” at AIMCo, which saw the entire board of directors, including Kroner, as well as chief executive Evan Siddall , removed from their posts. PSP and OTPP Selling $1 Billion-Plus PE Stakes

Chris Witkowsky of Buyouts reports Canadian giant PSP Investments shops $1 billion-plus portfolio: PSP investments is shopping a large portfolio of fund stakes that could total up to around $1.5 billion, according to sources and confirmed by the pension system in a statement to Buyouts . PSP is among several Canadian pensions in the market with a large LP secondaries. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is also out with a potential $1 billion-plus portfolio sale, sources said, confirming an earlier report by Bloomberg . The processes are part of a wave of LP sales that have driven the market this year to what are expected to be near-record, or better, activity levels. Alberta Has Gotten Itself in a Real Pension Pickle

The Alberta government has a lot of explaining to do. The Crown corporation suffered a serious investment-related loss in 2020 that prompted major actions by the province to strengthen AIMCo’s board and senior management. Those changes are now in place. Ian Bickis of The Canadian Press reports CPP Investments earned 8 per cent in latest fiscal year, net assets rose to $632 billion: Canada's biggest pension fund earned an eight per cent return last year, but significantly underperformed the 19.9 per cent return of its reference portfolio. The lower return for the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in its fiscal year ending March 31 can be explained in part by higher volatility in the stock-focused benchmark portfolio compared with the diversified, long-term return focus for the pension fund, chief executive John Graham said on Wednesday. Major financial companies kicked off earnings season with JPMorgan Chase finishing the session up 4.4% after the lender reported higher-than-expected third-quarter profit and raised its annual interest income forecast. Andrew Willis, Tim Kiladze and Irene Galea of the Globe and Mail report BCE shares drop 9% after paying $5-billion for U.S. internet provider Ziply and pausing dividend hikes: Bell Canada parent BCE Inc. is expanding into the United States by acquiring internet provider Ziply Fiber for $5-billion, while also putting dividend hikes on hold in order to help fix its balance sheet. Investors showed frustration with the news by sending BCE’s stock 9 per cent lower in early trading on Monday. The company’s shares, now worth around $40.50 each, are trading for the same price they did in late 2011. Karen Friar and Hamza Shabanof Yahoo report the Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq tumble as traders trim rate-cut bets: US stocks fell on Friday, on track for weekly losses as investors absorbed Chair Jerome Powell's signal that the Federal Reserve won't hurry to make interest-rate cuts. The S&P 500 ( ^GSPC ) dropped 1.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( ^DJI ) slid roughly 0.7%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC ) led declines, falling nearly 2%. Powell's hawkish comments are casting a pall on markets as the initial optimism for President-elect Donald Trump's policies starts to wear off.
